A plate and frame filter press is an intermittent, high-pressure solid-liquid separation device. It relies on filter chambers formed by filter plates and frames, where pressure forces the slurry through the filter medium, achieving solid particle retention and liquid phase separation. It is widely used in industrial applications requiring low-moisture filter cakes.
II. Core Working Principle
Plate Sealing: The hydraulic system drives the clamping plate, pressing the alternately arranged filter plates and frames together, forming a sealed filter chamber between adjacent plates and frames.
Pressure Filtration: The slurry is pressurized and fed into the filter chamber by a feed pump. The filtrate passes through the filter cloth (or other filter medium) and is discharged from the drain holes of the filter plates. Solid particles are retained in the filter chamber, forming a filter cake.
Cake Discharge and Cleaning: After filtration, the hydraulic system releases the clamping plate, pulling the filter plates apart sequentially. The filter cake falls off by gravity or a scraper. After cleaning the filter cloth, the cycle begins again.
III. Structural Features
Core Components: Composed of filter plates, filter frames, clamping device, main beam, and feeding system. The filter plate surface has a textured surface to support the filter cloth and guide the flow of the filtrate; the filter frame holds the slurry and filter cake; the clamping device is available in manual, mechanical, and hydraulic types, with the hydraulic type providing higher pressure for high-pressure applications.
Filter media: Commonly used filter cloths (polyester, nylon, polypropylene, etc.), with different pore sizes and acid/alkali resistance and abrasion resistance properties selected according to material characteristics.
Operating mode: Typical intermittent operation, requiring a complete process of 'clamping → feeding → filtering → pressure relief → plate pulling → cake unloading → cleaning,' making continuous operation impossible.
IV. Applicable fields
Due to its high dewatering pressure (far exceeding that of belt filter presses) and low filter cake moisture content, it is widely used in:
Coal preparation industry: treating coal slurry water, recovering fine coal slurry, and reducing filter cake moisture content to 18%~25%.
Chemical industry: separating acid and alkali slag, dyes, pigments, fertilizers, and other slurries.
Environmental protection industry: Treats municipal and industrial sludge, especially suitable for dewatering sludge with high viscosity and fine particles.
Mining and metallurgical industry: Treats tailings slurry and smelting waste.
